Courtesy Titles (Research Associates, Research Fellows, Visiting Scholars, Visiting Scholar Graduates, and Visiting Scholar Undergraduates)
Research Associate and Research Fellow (CAPM 608.355)
- Research Associate: A research associate is a non-salaried appointment intended to provide for visiting scholars and scientists of distinguished standing who may be recommended by departments and organized research units for such association with the university. The candidate must hold the degree of Ph.D. or possess training substantially equivalent to that required for the Ph.D., and must have demonstrated exceptional fitness in independent research in addition to that required for the Ph.D.
- Research Fellow: A research fellow is a non-salaried appointment intended to provide for visiting fellows who come to the University, for example: National Research Council Fellow; Social Science Research Council; Commonwealth Fund Fellow; Rockefeller Foundation Fellow; traveling fellows from other universities, etc. The candidate must hold the degree of Ph.D. or possess training equivalent to that required for the Ph.D., but need not have had experience as an independent research worker aside from research done for the doctoral degree.
- Appointments to both the Research Fellow and Research Associate title are not to exceed three years. There is no maximum number of years of service in this title.
Visiting Scholars, Visiting Scholar Graduates, and Visiting Scholar Undergraduates (CAPM 609.430)
A person on leave from an academic appointment, or other employment, or student enrollment at a home institution or other entity may be appointed as a Visitor to the University of California to participate in a short-term educational, research, or other academic project under the supervision of an academic appointee.
- A Visiting Scholar must hold the degree of Ph.D.
- A Visitor (Graduate Student) and Visitor (Undergraduate) must be enrolled in a degree granting program or equivalent at an institution of higher education other than the University of California.
- Visitors are appointed for short periods not to exceed one year. There is no maximum number of years of service in this title.
Conditions of Appointment in Courtesy Titles
- These appointments are always without salary.
- Courtesy appointees are eligible for J-1 visa sponsorship.
