How do I start a crowdfunding or Giving Day project?

Crowdfunding

Do work with the UC Santa Cruz Annual Giving team to set up a crowdfunding project on the campus portal. Get to them via a PBSci development officer, who will strategize with you and help you present your project to Annual Giving for consideration.

Don’t set up a crowdfunding project on any external portal, such as Facebook or Benevity. Money must come through the campus portal so the donors can take advantage of the UC Santa Cruz tax exempt giving status.

Giving Day

Giving Day 2019 was 2/27/19. You can expect Giving Day 2020 sometime in February.

Giving Day projects tend to earn in the neighborhood of $1000, with some capturing closer to $20,000. The ones that work best have a network of donors, alumni, and friends who can promote the project on social media on the day of the event. One of the best reasons to do a Giving Day project is to build a larger pool of supporters who might give again in the future.

Projects can be started by faculty, staff, student groups, or volunteers.

Having donors lined up in advance to offer challenge matches is an effective way to boost participation.

Requirements:

  • A brief compelling statement of the impact the fund will have
  • Photo or video (preferred)
  • A champion to oversee the project
