Dear PBSci Community,
We are providing this advanced notice regarding a planned electrical shutdown occurring over Spring Break impacting multiple PBSci buildings to ensure transparency about the critical nature of this work and to allow time for planning as well as addressing any concerns or questions.
There will be multiple planned high voltage electrical shutdowns across residential campus during Spring Break 2025, from Monday, March 24, 2025 to Friday, March 28, 2025. These outages are necessary to remove and replace failed switches, repair a broken high-voltage conduit, and pull in new high-voltage cable. The work for Science Hill will be performed on Wednesday, March 26th and last for an 8-12 hour duration.
Why This Work Is Necessary
Critical repairs are necessary to remove and replace eight electrical switches that are at end of life. The switches have been recalled due to the possibility of failure, which would cause loss of electrical power to the residential campus. This project is necessary for long term preventative maintenance.
Impacts on Science Hill
- Power to campus buildings will be limited to emergency backup generators during the shutdown.
- The campus cogen plant will continue to operate, but will not be supplying power to the listed PBSci buildings since the work involves some Cogen components.
- This shutdown will not affect power at the Coastal Science Campus, Earth & Marine Sciences, Thimann Labs, or Westside Research Park.
The following outlines the key details for this Work Advisory:
LOCATIONS:
BioMedical Sciences
Center for Adaptive Optics
Interdisciplinary Sciences Building
Natural Sciences 2, including NS2 Annex

* Note: Thimann & E&MS will not be impacted by this work as they are both on different power switch feeders than the rest of Science Hill.
UTILITY TO BE SHUTDOWN:
Electrical Utility Power *WITH NO COGEN POWER for any buildings
REASON:
Science Hill electrical infrastructure work to replace failed switches, repair broken high-voltage conduit, and pull in new high-voltage cable.
DATE OF SHUTDOWN:
Wednesday, March 26th, 2025
SCHEDULED TIMES:
7:00 AM – 7:00 PM – no regular utility power or COGEN power
*The anticipated duration of work is 12 hours maximum
IMPACTS:
During this 8-12 hour electrical shutdown, there will be no regular utility power or COGEN power to listed buildings, only standby and emergency power will remain online.
- ***Standby generator power will be online and equipment plugged into emergency standby power outlets will be supported.
- During the shutdown, only emergency egress lighting will be functional.
This notification is intended to give ample notice to the PBSci community. More detailed information and preparation information will be forthcoming in the coming weeks.
