SCIENCE HILL LOCATIONS:
BioMedical Sciences
Center for Adaptive Optics
Interdisciplinary Sciences Building
Natural Sciences 2, including NS2 Annex
Physical Sciences Building
Sinsheimer Labs
* Note: Thimann & E&MS will not be impacted by this work as they are both on different power switch feeders than the rest of Science Hill.
UTILITY TO BE SHUTDOWN:
Electrical Utility Power *WITH NO COGEN POWER for any buildings
SCHEDULED DATE:
Wednesday, March 26th, 2025 (Add this to your calendar)
SCHEDULED TIMES:
7:00 AM – 7:00 PM – no regular utility power or COGEN power
*The anticipated duration of work is 12 hours, maximum
REASON:
Science Hill electrical infrastructure work to replace failed switches, repair broken high-voltage conduit, and pull in new high-voltage cable. This project is necessary for long term preventative maintenance.
IMPACTS:
During this 8-12 hour electrical shutdown, there will be no regular utility power or COGEN power to listed buildings, only standby and emergency power will remain online. This shutdown will impact all Science Hill buildings except for Thimann Labs and Earth & Marine Sciences.
- ***Standby and Emergency Generator power will be online and equipment plugged into emergency standby power outlets will be supported.
- During the shutdown, only emergency egress lighting will be functional.
- Biomed elevators are on standby power and will remain in service. All other elevators in affected buildings will be out of service – please plan egress and access accordingly.
- The campus cogen plant will continue to operate, but will not be supplying power to the listed PBSci buildings since the work involves some Cogen components.
WARNING/PRECAUTIONS:
- Typical circuits should not be loaded with more than 15amps. It is recommended that you do not employ plug-strips to add load to standby receptacles unless you are absolutely sure that you are beneath the 15amp load so you don’t trip the breaker in your lab and/or overload the standby generator.
- The HVAC/Air handling systems will be offline during this shutdown. Do not use chemicals or any other hazardous materials for the duration of the shutdown.
- Building activity/occupancy is not recommended during this shutdown as standard electricity will not be available.
- Extra dry ice will be available if needed for unprotected freezers/in the case of generator failure at regular supply locations.
We appreciate your understanding and cooperation as we work to strengthen campus infrastructure. Please let us know at pbsciwodesk@ucsc.edu if you have any questions.
