Overview Conservation
Marine ecosystems foster immense biodiversity that nourishes and provides livelihoods for human communities world-wide. The ocean regulates crucial climate processes by absorbing and storing vast amounts of carbon dioxide while simultaneously producing oxygen. However, the ocean’s ability to perform these vital functions is imperiled by a host of human-caused threats, including climate change, habitat destruction, overfishing, and pollution.
The Foundation’s Conservation grant making focuses primarily upon issues of ocean conservation.
PMAFF prioritizes work at the science-to-policy interface that is evidence-based, delivers measurable impact, and focuses on the conservation of marine biodiversity across the priorities above. Please note: The Conservation Program rarely considers funding academic research, baseline data collection or monitoring, technology development, impact investments or commercial endeavors, clean-up programs, community outreach, or education.
Priorities within Conservation:
- Reform of international transboundary fisheries governance
- Conservation of coral reef ecosystems
- Increase the long-term legal capacity
- Support for US-based organizations that aim to advance evidence-based policy and protection of the US marine environment
- Implementation of sustainable and effective Marine Protected Areas
- Conservation of sharks and rays
- Ending marine plastic pollution
- Ocean-climate solutions
