Three open calls – Simons Foundation: Math and Physical Sciences; Aquatic Microbial Ecology Inbox

Oct 12, 2022 | Awards & Funding, Research

To: All Divisional Faculty and Researchers
From: Office of Corporate and Foundation Relations
Subject: Funding Opportunity

The Office of Foundations Relations is pleased to share three open calls for funding from the Simons Foundation;  one in Mathematics and Physical Sciences and two in Aquatic Microbial Ecology. Please see the details for each of these below.

UCSC Contact: Foundation Relations, Samantha Forde, forde@ucsc.edu
Funder: Simons Foundation

Opportunity 1

Simons Collaborations in Mathematics and the Physical Sciences
LOI Deadline: November 1, 2022
Funding: $8 Million

Overview

A Simons Collaboration in MPS should address a mathematical or theoretical topic of fundamental scientific importance, where a significant, new development creates a novel area for exploration or provides a new direction for progress in an established field. The questions addressed by the collaboration may be concrete or conceptual, but there should be little doubt that answering them would constitute a major scientific milestone. The project should have clearly defined initial activities and goals by which progress and success can be measured. The support from the foundation should be seen as critical for the objectives of the project.

Please see the complete call announcement here.

Opportunity 2

Simons Early Career Investigator in Marine Microbial Ecology and Evolution Awards
LOI Deadline: November 4, 2022
Funding: up to $810,000

Overview

The purpose of these awards is to help launch the careers of outstanding investigators in the fields of microbial ecology and evolution in marine or natural freshwater systems, who will advance our understanding through experiments, modeling or theory. Investigators must be currently active in basic research addressing fundamental questions in microbial ecology and/or evolution in natural aquatic systems, excluding research focusing on the microbiomes of animals or plants, problems related to pollution and paleoceanography and/or geobiology.

Please see the complete call announcement here.

Opportunity 3

Simons Investigators in Aquatic Microbial Ecology Awards
Deadline: December 2, 2022
Funding: up to $1,750,000

Overview

The purpose of these awards is to support recently tenured, outstanding investigators in the field of microbial ecology in marine or natural freshwater systems, who will advance our understanding through field studies, laboratory experiments, modeling or theory. The program will support a new research direction or an innovative expansion of current work. Investigators must be currently active in basic research addressing fundamental questions in microbial ecology or microbial biogeochemistry in natural aquatic systems (excluding research focusing on the microbiomes of animals, problems related to pollution, paleoceanography or geobiology). Scientists who intend to transition into aquatic systems from other fields will be considered if they satisfy the eligibility requirements.

Special instructions

Please notify the Office of Foundation Relations if you are interested in applying to this opportunity (cfr@ucsc.edu). For proposals, please submit a proposal intake form prior to UCSC’s internal Institutional Deadlines. For an LOI, please submit the intake form if you are invited to submit a full proposal.  For support developing your proposal/LOI, please contact the Research Development Specialist assigned to your unit or send a request to resdev@ucsc.edu.

The Office of Foundation Relations is a unit of University Relations. The FR team creates and maintains mutually beneficial, long-term relationships with private organizations, matching grant initiatives with educational and research programs and centers. FR supports faculty and staff to identify and approach these and other private foundations for funding, to assist in strategic positioning of the grant application, and to facilitate funder campus visits.
