PBSci Woodshop Services and Moves Support

PBSci Woodshop Overview

UCSC Physical and Biological Sciences (PBSci) has its own divisional Woodshop team and recharge group to physically complete PBSci space moves, full lab renovations, and installations, among many other tasks and projects. Our team has a combined carpentry experience of over 75 years, over 35 years of which were dedicated to UC Santa Cruz and lab/STEM specialization!

The PBSci Woodshop is a divisional resource available to the PBSci community for a variety of tasks such as those described above free of charge. The woodshop also performs larger scale projects for the division on a recharge basis; the threshold for determining whether a project is a recharge is dependent on 1) hours of labor, 2) materials required, and 3) extenuating circumstances (which are determined on a case by case basis).

Examples of Larger Projects/Recharge work:

  • Lab renovations
  • Equipment modifications
  • Custom fixturing

Smaller work supported by the division:

  • Building and installing gas cylinder restraints
  • Mounting whiteboards and framed photos
  • Installing earthquake safety measures (braces, restraints, etc.)
  • Furniture & equipment removals/disposals, moves, and additions

Standard recharge rates are as follows:

PB SCI PB SCI NON – PB SCI NON – UCSC
EXAMPLES Dean’s Office Depts Depts/Schools
Business Office ORU’s ORU’s
Facilities Programs Programs
LABOR NO CHARGE $79.00 $79.00 $111.00

FOOTNOTES APPLY * 1&2 3 Markup

FOOTNOTE 1: When labor and materials together exceed $150, charge the FULL AMOUNT
FOOTNOTE 2: When labor and materials together total less than $150, there will be NO CHARGE
FOOTNOTE 3: Charge the FULL AMOUNT for labor and materials

* The woodshop does NOT charge the PB Sci Dean’s office, Business Office (BO), nor Facilities for labor or materials on work these offices request for themselves nor for others when work requested for others is the responsibility of the division and would generally have been paid for by the Dean, the BO or by Facilities. For instance, if PB Sci Facilities asked that an ergo keyboard, white board or cork board be installed for a PB Sci dept, there would be no charge to the dept because this is work that PB Sci Facilities is responsible to provide out of its own budget. The Wood Shop does not charge for anything related to safety, earthquake bracing, tank restraints. The Wood Shop does not charge to move furniture within the division of division owned furniture. The Wood Shop does charge to move non division owned furniture.
