Research Development 

Research Development is a unit within the Office of Research. Research Development Specialists guide researchers through the proposal submission process and assist with idea generation, opportunity searches, and preparing competitive proposals (e.g., reviewing, editing, providing document support). 

We will be sharing select funding opportunities and updates with you on a bi-weekly basis; look for our messages every other Wednesday. Please click the links below for detail on specific opportunities.

NIH NCI Clinical and Translational Exploratory/Developmental Studies (R21) – Oct. 20, 2020
Funding for advancements in cancer treatment, diagnosis, prevention, symptom management, or reduction of cancer health disparities.

NIH Investigator Initiated Research in Computational Genomics and Data Science (R01) – Nov. 16, 2020 Funding for genomics research developing analytical methodologies, tools and software, and/or refinement of software and tools of high value to the biomedical genomics community.

NIH Investigator Initiated Research in Computational Genomics and Data Science (R21) – Nov. 16, 2020  Funding for exploratory genomics research developing analytical methodologies, tools and software, and/or refinement of software and tools of high value to the biomedical genomics community.

Environmental Sciences (Heather Bell, PhD; hmbell@ucsc.edu)

National Geographic Society/Microsoft AI for Earth Innovation Grant – October 21, 2020
Supports projects for 1 year up to $100k and provides access to AI for Earth and Azure resources.

NSF Dynamics of Integrated Socio-Environmental Systems – November 16, 2020
Supports research projects for 2-5 years up to $1.6 million and Research Coordination Networks for 4-5 years up to $500k.

Multi-Agency Ecology and Evolution of Infectious Diseases (EEID) – November 18, 2020
Projects must address the quantitative or computational understanding of pathogen transmission dynamics and are typically interdisciplinary.

Mathematical Sciences Postdoctoral Research Fellowships (MSPRF) – October 21, 2020
Supports research in areas of mathematics and statistics, including applications to other disciplines. Duration is 48 months, up to $150k.

Other Opportunities and Announcements

NSF Graduate Research Fellowship Program (GRFP) – October 19-22, 2020
The GRFP provides three years of support for the graduate education of individuals who have demonstrated their potential for significant research achievements in STEM or STEM education.

NOAA FY2021 Marine Debris Research – Required LOI due November 4, 2020
Funds research that advances our understanding of the fate and transport pathways of marine debris and the variable processes of degradation and fragmentation that may occur during transport for up to three years and $350k.

Submitting a proposal intake form will help streamline the proposal process. This initiates a proposal in Cayuse, notifies OSP, and enables Research Development Specialists to connect with you. For best support, contact us early and ensure you meet institutional deadlines.
