Dear colleagues,
The Science Division’s communications team has created a new Google Calendar called “Science Division Cultural Observances Calendar” that lists various religious and cultural observances. We kindly ask that you add it to your Google Calendar, and that you check against this calendar when choosing dates and times for meetings, events, and other activities. This is not to say that you should avoid scheduling anything that conflicts with any of the entries on this calendar, but that you should be aware of such potential conflicts, and that you should factor them into your decisions on suitable times/dates for relevant activities.
A few additional caveats:
- We have done our best to capture as many prominent observances as possible, but there may be missing events or incorrect dates. If any observances are missing from this calendar or need to be amended, please let us know at pbsciea@ucsc.edu.
- Some of the observances in the calendar only take place until, during, or after a certain time of day, rather than for the whole day indicated.
- There are many weekly observances (e.g., Friday, Saturday, or Sunday for the major Abrahamic religions) that are not indicated in the calendar.
If you have specific questions about how best to accommodate a particular observance, please contact our Associate Dean for DEI, Giulia Gurun (ggurun@ucsc.edu).

If the above calendar link does not work for you, go to the column on the left of your Google Calendar, scroll down to Other calendars. Then click the plus button and select Subscribe to calendar. On the next screen, type Science Division Cultural Observances Calendar in the Add calendar field. On that settings page, you can also choose to receive notifications for events on this calendar, when events are added, changed, or canceled, and more.
Please share this information with others in your department who are involved in scheduling or event planning so they can also use it as a planning resource.
Thank you,
Bryan
