Research Development is a unit within the Office of Research. Research Development Specialists collaborate with researchers and assist with developing concepts, building strategies and teams, finding relevant funding opportunities, and preparing competitive proposals.

UC RGPO has announced that the MRPI call will be released in March. The categories and application process are expected to be similar to previous years. However, LOIs will require somewhat more detailed information. Now is the time to start thinking about your team.

NIH Support for Conferences and Scientific Meetings (R13) – April 12

Funding to support high quality conferences that are relevant to the public health and to the scientific mission of the participating Institutes and Centers.

Exploratory Grants in Cancer Control (R21) – June 7

Funding for projects that focus on different aspects of cancer control by modifying behavior, screening, and understanding etiologic factors contributing to the development of cancer, and developing ways to control cancer.

Small Grants for New Investigators to Promote Diversity in Health-Related Research (R21) – June 16

Support for new investigators from diverse backgrounds, including from groups nationally underrepresented in biomedical, clinical, behavioral and social sciences research, to conduct small research projects in the scientific mission areas of the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) or the National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI).

CA NRA Urban Greening Program – March 28

Supports urban greening and urban forestry projects that reduce greenhouse gas emissions and provide multiple additional benefits. This program will give priority consideration to projects located within and benefitting disadvantaged communities. No minimum or maximum.

US Mission to Pakistan University Partnership Countering Climate Change in Sindh and Balochistan – March 30

PAS Karachi seeks proposals that will bolster curriculum development and provide collaborative research, virtual teaching exchanges, sharing of pedagogical resources, professional development for faculty, and faculty-and-student exchanges between one or more accredited, four-year U.S. colleges or universities and three Pakistani universities. $450K-$500K.

ABC is soliciting research proposals relevant to sustainability, pest management, water and nutrient management, pomology, and harvest.

BLM (HQ) Wildlife Resource Management – April 4

Supports projects that protect biodiversity; increase resilience to climate change; contribute to conserving at least 30 percent of our lands and waters by the year 2030; support State agencies to meet State wildlife population objectives; engage communities of color, low income families, and rural and indigenous communities to enhance economic opportunities related to wildlife; and use the best science and data available to make decisions. Provides $25K-$1.5M over up to 5 years.

Main topics: (1) Development of Lightweight Solar Sail Attitude Control Technologies. (2) Hibernation and Recovery of Solar-Powered Systems for Lunar Missions and (3) Tailorable Composite Design Concepts towards Dimensionally Stable Structures. Funding up to 220K/year, 3 years.

Algorithms for Modern Power Systems (AMPS) – May 11

Support research projects to develop the next generation of mathematical and statistical algorithms for improvement of the security, reliability, and efficiency of the modern power grid. Anticipate funding 4-10 awards totalling $2M.

NSF DCL- Directorate of Geosciences-Veterans Education and Training Supplement (GEO-VETS)

To fund U.S. veterans who are students, K-12 teachers, or 2-year college faculty to work with active GEO grantees to conduct NSF funded research and to be involved in fieldwork.

NSF DCL – Research Experiences for Teachers (RET) Supplement

K-12 educators and two-year college science faculty in research projects funded by the Directorate for Geosciences (GEO) at NSF, limited to $14,500 per teacher.

NSF Civic Innovation Challenge (CIVIC) – Stage 1 proposals due May 5

CIVIC is a research and action competition that accelerates the transition to practice of foundational research and emerging technologies into communities through civic-engaged research. It includes two tracks: Track A, Living in a changing climate: pre-disaster action around adaptation, resilience, and mitigation and Track B, Bridging the gap between essential resources and services & community needs. Required Stage 1 Planning grants provide up to $50K over 6 months. Stage 2 awards provide up to $1M over 12 months. Q&A Sessions March 10 and 22.

NSF Strengthening American Infrastructure – May 5

Supports human-centered fundamental and potentially transformative research aimed at strengthening America’s infrastructure. Three proposal classes will be considered: planning grants provide up to $150K over 1 year; research grants provide up to $750K over 3 years; conference grants provide up to $50K over 1 year. 

NSF Pathways to Enable Open-Source Ecosystems (PEOSE) – Phase I, May 12; Phase II, October 21

The goal of the PEOSE program is to fund new OSE managing organizations, each responsible for the creation and maintenance of infrastructure needed for efficient and secure operation of an OSE based around a specific open-source product or class of products. Phase I scoping awards provide up to $300K over one year. Phase II development awards are up to $1.5M over up to two years.

DOD – DURIP Defense University Research Instrumentation Program – May 13

For funds to acquire major equipment or instrumentation to augment current, or develop new, research capabilities in the technical areas of interest to the DoD. $50K-$1.5M.
