Dear Colleagues,

Over the last year, the University of California Office of the President (UCOP) has worked with the governor’s office and the state legislature to conceive and fund a UC Climate Initiative.  As a result of their efforts, the recently signed state budget included $185M for investments in UC climate research and innovation, with a goal to implement solutions.

In addition to $20M allocated to UCSC to develop the Center for Coastal Climate Resilience (see Chancellor Larive’s recent announcement),  $100M was allocated to the UC system to support grants for transformational climate research, innovation, and entrepreneurship. A portion of the funds will likely be available as seed and matching funds for other grants. We expect that UCOP will release further details on the funding opportunities in late July or early August.

In anticipation of forthcoming calls, the Office of Research is scheduling virtual information sessions for Friday, August 19, 2022, and Wednesday, August 24, 2022. Each 1½ hour session will include an overview of the UC climate funding opportunities and related campus efforts, as well as Q&A. These sessions will primarily focus on the $100M allocated to the UC system. In addition, we will organize breakout rooms around common research themes to help facilitate collaboration and discuss potential strategies for obtaining climate-related research funding.

Please use your UCSC account to register at the links below:

I look forward to talking with you all about these exciting opportunities for our campus.

Best regards,
John
