Subject: NSF Competition

The Office of Research is pleased to announce the launch of the internal competition for the NSF Scholarships in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (S-STEM) programThe S-STEM program enables low-income students with academic ability, talent or potential to pursue successful careers in promising STEM fields. Ultimately, the program seeks to increase the number of low-income students who graduate with a S-STEM eligible degree and contribute to the American innovation economy with their STEM knowledge. The program provides awards to institutions of higher education (IHEs) to fund scholarships, as well as to adapt, implement, and study evidence-based curricular and co-curricular activities that have been shown to be effective supporting recruitment, retention, transfer (if appropriate), student success, academic/career pathways, and graduation in STEM.

The program supports two Tracks for which UCSC is eligible to submit proposals: Track 2 (Implementation: Single Institution) and Track 3 (Inter-institutional Consortia). Track 2 awards provide up to $1,500,000 and Track 3 awards up to $5,000,000 over six years.

UCSC may submit up to two proposals (either as a single institution or as subawardee or a member of an Inter-institutional Consortia project). PIs should submit to the internal competition whether UCSC is the lead on the proposed project or not. Submissions to the internal competition are due December 7, 2022, through InfoReady. Proposals are due to NSF by February 20, 2023.

See the competition summary (linked here) for additional information. For those interested, the Office of Research Development will be holding an informal, virtual information session on Thursday, November 17 from 2:00 PM to 2:45 PM PST. Join us via Zoom.
