Research Development 

Research Development is a unit within the Office of Research. Research Development Specialists guide researchers through the proposal submission process and assist with idea generation, strategizing, opportunity searches, and preparing competitive proposals (e.g., reviewing, editing, providing document support). 

We will be sharing select funding opportunities and updates with you on a bi-weekly basis so look for our messages every other week.

NIH Investigation of the Transmission of Kaposi Sarcoma-Associated Herpesvirus (KSHV) (R01 Clinical Trial Optional) – December 15, 2020

Funding to advance our understanding of: the modes of transmission of Kaposi sarcoma-associated herpesvirus (KSHV)

NIH Exploiting Genome or Epigenome Editing to Functionally Validate Genes or Variants Involved in Substance Use Disorders (R21/R33 Clinical Trial Not Allowed) – December 18, 2020

Funding to exploit genome or epigenome editing to functionally validate and characterize genes or variants involved in substance use disorder-relevant phenotypes

NIH Blueprint for Neuroscience Research: Functional Neural Circuits of Interoception (R01) – December 19, 2020

Funding for fundamental understanding of interoception with a specific focus on dissecting and determining the function of neural circuits that connects peripheral organs/tissues with the central nervous system (CNS) via peripheral ganglia

NIH Research Supplements to Promote Diversity in Health-Related Research (Admin Support – Clinical Trial Not Allowed)– Deadlines vary by IC (see RFP)

Funding to enhance the diversity of the research workforce by recruiting and supporting students, postdoctorates, and eligible investigators from diverse backgrounds—these students need to not have been funded by the PI in the past

DOE Environmental System Science – Required pre-application due December 17, 2020; Full applications due March 4, 2021

Provides up to $1M total over 3 years for standard projects and up to $300K over 1-2 years for exploratory projects in two topical areas: Terrestrial-Aquatic Interfaces and Perturbations and Disturbances. Exploratory grants for a third research area, Novel Methods for Studying “Hot Spots” and “Hot Moments” of Biogeochemical Activity, are capped at $150K total.

USDA Agricultural Outlook Forum – February 18-19, 2021

A free event that aims to facilitate information sharing among stakeholders and explores a range of current and emerging topics in agriculture. This year’s theme is “Building on Innovation: A Pathway to Resilience;” past programs are available for review.

NSF Understanding the Rules of Life: Microbiome Interactions and Mechanisms – February 23, 2021

Provides up to $3M total for a period of up to 5 years.

Advanced Technologies and Instrumentation (ATI)  – October 1, 2021 – November 15, 2021

For development of new technologies and instrumentation in astronomy and astrophysics. Supports the study of astronomical sources from ground-based observatories, which operate from optical through radio wavebands of the electromagnetic spectrum. ~800K, up to 4 years.

Dear Colleague Letter: Broadening Participation in STEM Entrepreneurship and Innovation (BPINNOVATE) – February 9, 2021

Science of Science program (PD 19-125Y), to support broadening participation in entrepreneurship and innovation. The purpose of this Dear Colleague Letter (DCL) is to invite proposals identifying contextual factors and mitigation strategies to enhance participation and success of various populations in STEM entrepreneurship and innovation. DARPA Young Faculty Award (YFA) – January 08, 2021

High-impact funding to elite researchers early in their careers to develop innovative new research directions in the context of enabling transformative DoD capabilities. 12- 24 month, $500K

NOAA Undergraduate Scholarship Program – February 1, 2021

Provides funds for two years of undergraduate study to rising junior undergraduate students majoring in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) fields that directly support NOAA’s mission.

NSF Smart and Connected Communities – February 24, 2021

  • Track 1 Integrative Research Grants provide between $1.5M and $2.5M total for up to 4 years. 
  • Track 2 Integrative Research Grants provide up to $1.5M total for up to 3 years. Joint US-Japan Track 2 grants address topics related to recovery from the novel coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic and future resilience planning.
  • Planning Grants provide up to $150K for 1 year.
  • Proposals for Virtual Organizations may request funding up to $250K per year for up to 3 years. 

 Postdoctoral Enrichment Program (PDEP) Burroughs Wellcome Fund – January 14, 2021

Supports the career development activities for underrepresented minority postdoctoral fellows whose training and professional development are guided by mentors committed to helping them advance to stellar careers in biomedical or medical research. $60,000 over 3 years
