Program Description: Level I and II Grants

Overview – Level I Grants
Level I Grants are designed for individuals who may be earlier in their career, those looking to establish themselves better in their field, those seeking mentorship from others in their field and beyond, or those who want to grow their network and enhance their impact by joining a global community of National Geographic Explorers. This opportunity is best suited for individuals who have the potential and desire to make significant positive contributions to their field by leveraging the funding, capacity, and additional support provided by the National Geographic Society and connections to other Explorers. These grants are highly competitive and priority will be given to applicants who thoughtfully demonstrate how joining the Explorer Community will help to advance their career.
The National Geographic Society is accepting pre-applications for Level I Grants.
Award and Terms – Level I Grants
- $20,000/ one year
- Projects with a “Technology” focus, up to two years
- Unique opportunities for training, networking, coaching, mentorship, and more from fellow National Geographic Explorers, experts, staff, partners, and forums.
- Individuals interested in being an active part of the Explorer Community.
Overview – Level II Grants
Researchers more established in their field, have previously received a National Geographic Society grant, or are seeking a higher level of funding, may apply for a Level II Grant. A previously received National Geographic Society grant is NOT required to apply for this opportunity. These grants are highly competitive and reserved for select projects that push boundaries to achieve significant and tangible impact in the field. Projects can be up to two years long.
Award and Terms – Level II Grants
- Up to $100,000 / two years
- Smaller requests will be accommodated and will not be more or less competitive.
- Grantees will provide mentorship to others within the Explorer community

Timeline
- April 12, 2023, 9:00 am PT Submission NGS portal by 9:00AM PT
- May 2023 Level I applicants notified
- June 27, 2023, 9:00 am PT If Invited, Level I full application due
- September 2023 Level I and Level II applicants notified
NGS accepts applications twice a year. Application deadlines are in April and October.

The FR team creates and maintains mutually beneficial, long-term relationships with private organizations, matching grant initiatives with educational and research programs and centers. FR supports faculty and staff to identify and approach these and other private foundations and corporations for funding, assists in the strategic positioning of the grant application, and facilitates funder campus visits.
